A non-invasive test which uses ultrasound waves to give detailed images of your heart in motion, to assess the structure and function of your heart. Ultrasound gel will be applied to your chest for this test, and a gown will be provided for female patients.

EXERCISE STRESS TEST

In most cases, this test is carried out to assist in making a diagnosis of coronary artery disease. It can be used to evaluate your capacity to undertake certain physical activities and guide appropriate training programs.

You will be required to walk on a treadmill that increases in speed and incline at intervals. You should allow 30 minutes for the test, avoid a heavy meal beforehand, and wear comfortable clothing (e.g. tracksuits, shorts, or slacks) and walking shoes.

STRESS ECHOCARDIOGRAM

A stress echocardiogram is a combined Exercise Stress Test with echo images of the heart, which renders the test more informative and sensitive. It is used to investigate and identify a cardiac source of breathlessness and assist in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease.

You will be required to walk on a treadmill that increases in speed and slope at intervals. You should allow 30 minutes for the test, avoid a heavy meal beforehand, and wear comfortable clothing (e.g. tracksuits, shorts, or slacks) and walking shoes. Your doctor may ask you to stop certain medications such as metoprolol, atenolol, carvedilol, verapamil, etc 24 to 48 hours prior to the test.

HOLTER MONITOR

A Holter Monitor provides a 24-hour recording of your heart rate and rhythm. Five ECG leads on adhesive electrodes will be placed on your chest, and connected to a small recorder which you will carry for 24 hours. This monitor usually takes 10 minutes to apply and you will need to remove your shirt/blouse for placement of the leads. You will not be able to shower until the completion of the test. Instructions will be given to you regarding the return of the device.

CT CORONARY ANGIOGRAM

A CT coronary angiogram, or CTCA, is a scan using contrast to identify the degree of narrowing of the coronary arteries caused by calcified or non-calcified plaques which are the known cause of heart attacks. A CTCA includes a Coronary Artery calcium or CAC score.  Depending on your score, your doctor may make recommendations on lifestyle changes, medications or treatments to reduce your potential risk from Coronary Artery disease CAD
